But other authors are still writing Zac Power stories. There are two new ones coming out in March called ‘Fossil Fury’ and ‘Shock Music’.

‘Lava Land’ would definitely make a cool Zac Power title!
The Phoenix Files books are aimed at ages 9 and up. They are much longer than Zac Power books, and the second one in particular is quite a bit scarier.
I do know of some younger kids who are reading the Phoenix Files books, though. Maybe get Mum or Dad to have a look and see what they think…

U are sure right about scarier! I’m over 9 but I won’t joke, Contact had me almost ripping the book in half from gripping it so tight when I read the Tabitha part. Mutation was more relaxing. Apart from that your books are AWSM and deserve to be bestsellers. I’m a author too, but I don’t have any books published (I am, after all, only eleven). My current book I’m writing is called role player, an action-packed car chase through the streets of L.A. In the night. I write first-person-view stories.
I can’t wait until doomsday and fallout are out, so keep going!

To answer your questions…
1. Not sure about Zac Power books after Fossil Fury and Shock Music, but I’ll let you know when I hear something.
2. The Phoenix Files #4 will be called “Underground”.
3. Here’s the story with Zac Power: There is no real person who is actually named H.I. Larry. That’s just the name that everyone who writes Zac Power books uses. The original author who wrote the first few Zac Power books was called Hilary Badger. “Hilary” became “H.I. Larry” on the book covers, and then it just kind of stuck.
4. Not sure about Zac Power or Phoenix Files movies. At the moment, there are no movie plans for either series (at least, not that I know of). But that doesn’t mean it will never happen – and if it does, I’ll definitely post something about it here!

glad you got back to me. My cousin, Alex will be delighted when I show to him what you told me.
I was talking to him about 5 minutes ago and now he wants to know what the 5th phoenix files book will be called.
If you get to write any more (not saying you aren’t) zac power stories, I think “moon games” would make a good title. If you want to know what i mean,here’s a rough idea of what I mean
Agent Blackwood and Zac’s Grandfather are both in the centre of BIG’s base when they start talking money. Agent Blackwood goes first. How this game works is when 2 enemy spy agencies go together and say how much money they have. the agency with the mot money wins. the winning team gets to close the other agency down. GIB have more money BUT BIG have backup plans. GIB have just found out that BIG have another agency supporting them so if BIG goes broke or something like that the supporting agency LST will take on BIG. What GIB find out later in the story is that BIG is their second biggest enemy, LST is their biggest enemy but what happens when BIG move in?
(This can be like an extreem mission only there could say 6 books)
The second story cam be can be called mission impossible.
In mission impossible BIG can move in to LST but when zac power gets there its too late now GIB have their greatest enemy now shutting them down for their money. LST now has over $600 million, that’s enouph to close GIB down for sure.
The third book can be called collapsing
In collapsing the now bigger LST has their most powerful agent named Max Lixon in disguise hanging round somewhere in GIB where their future is being planned. Max is wearing some sort of device which is recording everything they say. LST are planning things much more sofisticated than GIB would think of. More BIG agents are flying in from the moon to GIB in stolen GIB vehicles.
The fourth book can be called takeover.
In takeover LST have realised GIB has moved into a new base.
the new base is BIG’s old base. BIG left only one thing behind, the money. Hovever GIB left something behind too, Zac Power. LST have locked him up and he can’t get back to GIB now because he has no gadgets on him.
The fifth book could be called escape
In escape LST have Zac and Gib have $600 million. Zac is now working for LST and Caz is working for GIB. LST has Zac on a Mission against GIB to get the money.
In the 6th book, GIB realise that Zac has taken the money. GIB lost Max, which means theres only one person to save the day and the world, but will she save the human race? possibly and possibly not. that girl is

then you could write the Caz Rewop series

As for all your Zac Power ideas… I really like the idea of a book (or even a series) from Caz’s perspective. I think it would be really fun to see what happens behind the scenes at BIG. It’s something I’ve thought about before, but never found the opportunity to write.
You have a lot of other cool ideas here as well! Not sure if I’ll ever get back to writing Zac Power books, but it’s good to know that there are plenty more stories to be told!

I don’t want to give too much away about the next book, but if you have a look at Jordan’s strange behaviour in Contact, that might give you part of the answer about why book #3 is called “Mutation”.
Also, I try to use the last line of each book to give you a bit of a clue about what the next book is going to be about … so that might help too.
Apart from that, you’ll just have to wait until you read the book!

When I bought a week ago I said to myself, “I’m going to read this really slow so I don’t have a long wait until Mutation”. But I was unsuccesful!
I couldn’t stop reading!!
Today in Melbourne it was absoulutely POURING down with rain, so it really set the scene with the last couple of chapters!
I can’t wait till the next book!! It will be really interesting to here the story from Jordan’s Point of View.

I was at the WA State Library WRITE NOW! thingy. Do you remember me? I came at the last minute to get ARRIVAL signed. Right now, what’s happening in the Eastern States looks like a toilet. It’s has been ABSOLUTELY pouring with rain.
I’ve loved ARRIVAL. I’m up to the part with the riddle that Crazy Bill left them. I had a look at the CONTACT and MUTATION things on your website and I guessed that in each book you say it from each character’s POV. It’s Luke in the first book, Peter in the second and Jordan in the third.
Why is CONTACT called CONTACT? Do Luke, Peter and Jordan meet the dude that wants to kill everyone? I mean, it makes sence, doesn’t it?
I also LOVED the Zac Power books. But I’m not to big on them now (did you notice I put a ed on the end of loved?). My cousin Alex loves them now. He has a big book of them.

My birthday is February 10th, and I was born in Sydney.
To answer your second question… I’ve always loved writing (I was digging through some old stuff not long ago and found a book full of stories I wrote when I was 6!), but I started writing as a job at the end of 2007. I was talking to a friend of mine at church (Rowan McAuley, author of some of the Go Girl! books) and she told me that her publishing company (Hardie Grant Egmont) were looking for people to write some new books for the Zac Power series. So I had a go at writing one and then sent it to Rowan, who sent it on to the publishers. That story became Zac Power: Volcanic Panic, and I’ve been writing ever since!
As for The Phoenix Files, there will be 3 more books after Mutation – 6 altogether.

I thought some of those were pretty assignment-like questions!
I think the biggest thing I’d like to do with the Phoenix Files books is to raise some interesting questions for people to think about. As the series goes on, the characters will start to ask questions about who decides what’s good and evil, and *how *we decide those things. The characters are also starting to think about all the suffering they’re going through – and about whether all of it is for a reason, or whether their pain is just random bad stuff happening for no reason at all…
On top of that, I just want to tell a really exciting action/mystery story that (hopefully) keeps people guessing right till the end!
A lot of books have influenced the Phoenix Files – everything from the bible to Harry Potter to TV shows like Lost – but I don’t think the actual * storyline* of the Phoenix Files is very much like any of those. Basically, I just tried to come up with as many cool ideas as I could (ideas that I knew I’d like to read about) and crammed them all into one series!

my teacher gave us another question to answer.
“What do you think the author’s purpose was?”
And one more thing.
“Who do you think the author’s audience was? What is it about the novel that might indicate this?”
My initial response to this question was that it was for teenagers because of certain happenings in the story. The one example that I gave was “because of some of the events in the story. Such as when Crazy Bill threw the policemen up against the wall when they were in the tunnels.
To me it doesn’t seem convincing enough. So I was hoping that you could give me some interesting ideas.

Hey George,
I think you’re on the right track with your answer to the audience question. Another clue that I’m writing for teenagers is that that’s who the main characters are. Really early on, when I was coming up with my first ideas for the series, I thought The Phoenix Files was going to be for a younger audience… but then the story became much darker than I’d first thought, and so the ages of the audience, and the characters, both went up by a few years.
As for purpose… It sounds like the question is asking for your opinion, so there’s probably no right or wrong answer as far as the assignment goes. But from my point of view, the purpose is pretty much an even split between telling an interesting story and hopefully giving readers a few things to think about.

It’s interesting that you’re such a fan of Peter. People’s opinions about him seem to be really split. A friend of mine, after reading Mutation, said, “I just wanted to punch him in the face!” (But then, she kind of didn’t like him from the beginning…)

Tim and I just got back from Perth (Monday). I bought mutation (for the kids of course) as we waited for the plane, and made sure I read it before we returned, knowing that as soon as it was in the hands of the girls I would have to wait.I hate waiting! Remi finished it yesterday (Tuesday) and Bronte now has a serious case of Phoenix fever.
Great work!! I only wish I was a slower reader so that I could have enjoyed it for longer.

but that didn’t work out to well. Underground is going to be real cool to.
Th e colours have to be yellow, white or orange.
And there is another set of enemys (or good guys) in the series.

The colours of the books do have a bit to do with what the books are about… but probably you’d get a bit more of a clue from looking at the little differences in the pictures on the covers.

Most days, I try to get somewhere between 1000 and 2000 words written. A Phoenix Files chapter can be anywhere from 600 to 3000 words, so it depends on which chapter I’m working on at the time…

It’s looking like Underground will be a bit longer than the first three books. Books 1-3 were about 50,000 words each. Book 4 will probably be around 60,000… So maybe 50-60 extra pages? We’ll see…

I’ve been writing stories pretty much as long as I’ve known how to write – but the first one I got published was Zac Power: Volcanic Panic in 2007, when I was 22.
Underground definitely has a cliffhanger ending. Hopefully, it’s the most dramatic one so far!

Underground is going pretty well, thanks. At the moment, my editor is working through the second draft… so hopefully we’re getting pretty close to finished! I think the ending is definitely the biggest cliffhanger so far – but I’ll have to leave it to you guys to judge whether it’s as good as the others!

Mutation is available now, all over Australia and NZ. Underground will be out in May.
Things didn’t look good for Luke’s dad the last time we heard from him. I don’t want to give too much away about upcoming books – but by the end of the series, you’ll at least find out whether he survived or not.
I’ve already planned out the last three books in the series, and none of them are from Shackleton’s POV. But I think SOME kind of Shackleton story could be really interesting… Maybe I’ll do a short story or something one of these days.

There are a lot of twists and turns in Phoenix Files, it would actually make more sense if you read them backwards. I flipped through the first and second book and how much I missed was UNBELEIVABLE. Pryor yelled that they needed to see what the FALLOUT did to Crazy Bill. Officer Miller saw Peter running to his Dad while the phone was ringing, When Luke asked about Tabitha Crazy Bill said ” No You shouldn’t be asking about that you havn’t found the tape. Montag was the person who stitched Luke up.
And also I think Peter is Crazy Bill because C.B. said “I knew you would bring him along.

I don’t want to give too much away about POV in the last two books, but (assuming they both survive that long) Peter and Jordan would be pretty good guesses.
My favourite books have always been the ones where you pick up more stuff the second time you read them, so I’ve really tried to build those kinds of hints into The Phoenix Files. (Another example: notice what Mike is doing when we first meet him in Arrival…)
Interesting theory about Crazy Bill – although I have a feeling you might see things a bit differently after you’ve read Underground.

The cover colours don’t have any special significance as far as I know. The cover designer may have had something in mind, but I’ve never asked her about it.
As for Peter moving away from the others… part of you answer is in Mutation. Underground might also shed a bit more light on this…

I’m so glad I went, because now I have found out about a really great series of books! I think you are very nice how you are always getting involved in charities. I’d just like to ask you something: what will book 6 of the Phoenix Files be called? I know the names of books 1-5, and have read books 1-4, but I really want to know what book 6 is called! I’ve read the first threee books of the series and am about to borrow the fourth -underground-. I am just wondering if you will be making more than four because the other books only had about 20 days worth in each book, if that makes sense, if so when will they be out because i am a fast reader and i dont want to wait.

Unfortunately, there’s really not a whole lot I can do about the release date for Fallout. It’s not just a case of how quickly I can write the book (the first draft is already written). There’s a whole process of redrafting, editing, proofreading, typesetting, printing, distribution and marketing – and all of that takes time.
I realise it’s frustrating, waiting so long between books, and we’re all working hard to get them out there, but we also want to take the time to make sure each book is the best it can be.

The Zac Power books are aimed at kids aged 7+, so they’d be an easy read for most 12-year-olds. If you wanted to try one, I’d recommend the Mega Missions – they’re a 4-in-1 set with a bit more of a complex story.

The 6th cover is going to be a kind of steel blue colour – it’s my favourite of the six.
As for the kissing… There’s a little bit in Contact, but it might not be who you expect. Beyond that, I don’t want to say too much!

I don’t want to give anything away about Fallout, but Luke and Jordan are certainly going to be working pretty hard to stop Peter from doing what it looks like he’s going to do at the end of Underground.

I have recently done an assignment on books and I used Underground as one of them. I had to make a Chararcter Web on one of the characters, I chose Jordan, and I also had to write a page on why or why not I would like this person to be my friend.

I don’t think I could let a whole book go by at this point in the series without at least a bit of kissing…

I can not wait until Fallout then Doomsday. If there really will be a PF movie coming out, please don’t let it be in the US or UK because I would be devastated. Funny Story: The other day I was talking to my friends about the PF and I caled Luke and Jordan, Juke and Lordan. My friends laughed! I’ve been reading the comments on your website and people have been saying that Peter is Crazy Bill, well they’re wrong. Peter can’t be Crazy Bill because Peter and Crazy Bill and Jordan and Luke were at the abandoned airport in Book 1. Right? What’s up with Jeremy’s skin? People have lots of interesting ideas about Crazy Bill. Until Underground came out, quite a lot of people thought he was Luke’s dad in disguise. I don’t want to shut down anyone’s theory, because they’re all fun, but you will get a real answer by the end of the series.
You haven’t seen the last of Jeremy (or his weird skin). And you havent seen the last of Mike, Cathryn and Tank either – they play quite a large role in Book 5.

It definitely looks like something weird happened to Calvin’s emotional state when Jordan touched him. There’s a scene in Underground that might clarify a few things… or maybe it just makes them even more confusing. Either way, you will get an answer to this before the series is over.

I actually brainstorm for a lot longer than an hour – before I started writing the Phoenix Files books, I spent months mapping out the whole series from beginning to end. I make up some little bits as I go along, but the big stuff has been planned out since the beginning.

My inspiration comes from a whole bunch of places: books I’ve read, people I’ve met, being a student, being a teacher… I think everything in my life feeds into my writing in some way or other. My faith is a huge influence too. I believe that the universe is ultimately a place of hope and redemption, so anything I write is going to reflect that.

Fallout is the second-last book. The 6th and final book is Doomsday, out next year.
And not even my editors have the power to make The Phoenix Files into a movie! That all depends on someone from Hollywood or wherever deciding to buy the movie rights.

My plan has always been for the series to be six books long. I guess it’s possible that I might write a book with some of the same characters somewhere along the line, but I’m not sure what the story would be – because the ending of the sixth book is pretty final (and compared to their lives in Phoenix, the characters’ lives before Shackleton found them would be pretty boring, I think).

It’s Rory again. I’ve started a new book called ‘Hunted’. I’m 20 pages in so far. I’ll give you a quick synopsis:
Fel is sixteen and lives in Valhalla, the new utopian city that is built where part of Sydney used to be. Valhalla is ruled by the Guild, a large organisation with massive power. The Guild accuse Fel of a crime when he is simply trying to help a friend, and he flees to the land beyond Valhalla. Where he’s never been.
He mounts a rebellion, and it’s time for the hunted to become the hunter.

I agree with Isabelle’s theory. Peter is Crazy Bill! Otherwise, how would he have known Peter was going to come along to the airport (unless he’s pschic, which I doubt he is.)
Crazy Bill attacked Luke, which Peter was then angry with the newspaper for saying that Luke’s “girlfriend” (Jordan) Jumped on Crazy Bill’s back. How else would he have got the information? At the end of Underground it says that the haze whirled out of control, which is Peter going forward from where he killed Luke, apparently. He will then grow up in time to see himself, Luke and Jordan, in the past or future, (I don’t, I kind of confused myself.) I’m not sure in the books, but I think it may of mentioned that Crazy Bill had a mess of brown hair which Peter has (had?) Well, either that or I just imagined him to have brown hair!
Anyway, thats what I think.

What did Luke meen when he said he looked at Jordan differently with his clothes on?
Does he think of her as a leader or does he think it makes her look weird or does he think that he loves her more because he thinks that clothes and looks doesn’t mater to him or something else?
This does sound weird but it would help with my understanding of the book

I think that when Luke sees Jordan dressed in his clothes, it’s a reminder that the situation they’re in is pulling them closer together. There’s something a bit intimate about letting someone else wear your clothes – it’s something you’re probably more likely to do for a boyfriend or girlfriend rather than a “just friends” member of the opposite sex. Luke’s feelings for Jordan are already changing by this point in the book, and this just blurs the line even further between friendship and more-than-friendship.

Haha, you’re right – Jordan does seem to be getting a lot of unwanted attention, doesn’t she?
I would say yes, Soren is attracted to Jordan, but I don’t think he’s attracted to Jordan specifically. Soren’s been down in the Complex for years with only his mum for company, so it’s probably not surprising that he shows a bit of (creepy) interest in the first girl he runs into.
But by the time Fallout opens, I think Soren has gotten to know Jordan well enough to change his mind about her. I certainly don’t think Luke’s got any competition from that direction!

Hi, what’s the recommended reading age for the Phoenix Files?

I’d say about 11+ (although I know plenty of 8- to 10-year-olds who are reading them). There’s some violence, but it’s all in context and never glorified or gratuitous.
The books get darker and more complex as the series goes along, so maybe start with the first one and see what you think?

There was a prologue in the original draft of Arrival, but it got cut in editing (mostly because it wasn’t all that good!)
I don’t think Doomsday is going to have an epilogue… I’ll see if I think it needs one when I get there!

I’d say ANZAC Day will probably bump the release to later in the week… but it all depends on when the individual bookstores get their orders of the books and how quickly they get them onto the shelves.

And do you have a brother, cousin or someone who is related to you that is on the Voice, because I just saw someone on the voice who looks juust like you and speaks just like you. I was freaking out because I was like to my parents “Oh my gosh. That is like Chris Morphew’s identical brother or something because they look so alike and speaks just like him that it’s not funny!!!” and they’re like “Yes Imogen.” And I thought to myself i need to find out if they’re related! He doesn’t have the same last name as you but there still could be a chance!!
Sorry if I’m over explaining, I do that a lot and I’ve been pumped about ‘Fallout.’

Fallout is definitely the darkest book so far. Not to say that it’s completely without hope – but they are all feeling the pressure by this point.

I’ve read all the books but i can’t figure out who is who on the front covers (except for jordan) but I’m pretty sure the taller dude with his hands in his pockets is peter. i can’t figure out what the swirly thing in the O is either.do you think you’ll ever write another series after phoenix? and if so what genre would it be? is doomsday going to be out in 2012 or in 2013?
i have a list with about 100 books but i love your series so much the others can wait!

The swirly thing in the O is the emblem of the Vattel Complex. If I were a betting man, I’d say it probably had something to do with the “events” they were studying down there.
I definitely have plans to work on other series after The Phoenix Files. I’ve got a few ideas in mind, mostly featuring the same kind of real-world/sci-fi/action combo as Phoenix Files, but I still haven’t quite decided which of those ideas I want to tackle next.
Doomsday is due out in early 2013 – hopefully March, but it depends on how long the book takes to edit.

Doomsday is a kind of steel-blue colour. I’ll post a picture of it sometime soon.
The next place I’ll be signing books is at the Sydney Writers’ Festival on May 20th.

Hi everyone in Australia good luck with NAPLAN I don’t know about you but I absalutlly hate it. Anyway I’m still re-reading underground but I got fallout first out of my friends but since I’m still reading underground agin they’ve all gone and finished it and now they keep telling me what happens. i really really really love the phoenix files
i know everyone says it but why do you leave your books on a cliffhanger every time?
I think my favourite character, like you, is Jordan because she’s like me (we are the same age and i also i have a younger sister) but of course i’m no where near as brave as her.
Peter sometimes freaks me out (he’s so creepy) but i like Luke.
Since i had to buy my copy of Fallout online i had to wait a while but have now read it (pretty quickly too it was like a day!) and can say it was awesome. And since it came out near my birthday it was kind of like a birthday present.
Just two questions
What is your favourite cover of the phoenix files (like colour)? (although they are all very similiar)
And i know everyone asks this too but what happens in Doomsday?!

Sorry about the cliffhanger! I have kind of a love/hate relationship with cliffhanger endings. On the one hand, it can be frustrating waiting for the next bit of the story, but on the other hand, I think it’s kind of fun to have a chance to make predictions about what happens next (but, no, I’m not going to tell you what happens in Doomsday!)

just thought Id let you know, but Phoenix Files is seriously one of my most favourite series ever and just thinking about the new book made me get butterflies. so I’ll have you know, I went and bought it of course but now have to re-read the others to refresh my memory. and being back in Phoenix has never felt better >.< (yes im a massive bookworm haha)
